Most HP printers can join your Wi-Fi network using the HP Smart app, the printer’s built-in Wireless Setup Wizard, or WPS if your router supports it. Once connected, you can print from any device on the same network without using a USB cable.
1

Put the printer in setup mode

If this is a first-time setup, the printer may already be in setup mode. If not, restore network settings: on the printer’s control panel, open the Wireless or Network menu, then select Restore Network Settings or Restore Defaults. The exact steps vary by model, so check your manual on support.hp.com if needed.
2

Choose a connection method

Use one of the three methods below. The HP Smart app is usually the simplest.
On the printer’s control panel, open the Wireless, Network, or Setup menu. Select Wireless Setup Wizard. The printer will scan for networks. Choose your Wi-Fi name (SSID), enter your password using the on-screen keyboard or buttons, and confirm. The exact menu names vary by model.
If your router has a WPS button, press it. Within two minutes, on the printer’s control panel go to the Wireless or WPS menu and select WPS Push Button. The printer will connect automatically without needing a password.
Many HP printers only connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz network. If you have a single network name for both bands, the router should handle switching automatically.
If you do not have a router or need to print from a phone directly, use Wi-Fi Direct. Enable Wi-Fi Direct in the printer’s Wireless or Network menu, then connect your phone to the printer’s direct network name and print using the HP Smart app.
If the printer fails to connect, move it closer to the router, check that you entered the correct Wi-Fi password, and verify that your network is using WPA2 or WPA3 security. Restart the printer and router, then try again.
