What you need before you start
Gather the following items before you begin:- Your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password
- A computer, phone, or tablet for downloading the HP Smart app or drivers
- A power outlet near your printer
- Plain letter or A4 paper for the paper tray
Unbox and set up the printer
1
Remove packing materials
Open the box and lift the printer out carefully. Remove all tape, stickers, foam, and protective film from the outside and inside of the printer. Check inside the paper tray, scanner lid, and cartridge access area. Save the box and packing materials in case you need to move or return the printer.
2
Connect power and turn on
Plug the power cord into the back of the printer and into a wall outlet. Press the power button on the control panel. If your model has a separate power brick, connect it firmly between the cord and the printer.
3
Set language and country
On the printer’s control panel or touchscreen, select your preferred language and country/region when prompted. The exact steps vary by model; if you do not see a prompt, check the settings menu on the control panel. For model-specific button instructions, refer to your manual at https://support.hp.com.
4
Load paper
Pull out the paper tray and slide the paper-width guides to the edges. Load a stack of plain paper with the short edge forward and the print side down, then slide the guides until they touch the edges of the paper. Push the tray back in until it clicks.
5
Install ink or toner cartridges
Open the cartridge access door or lid as directed by the printer’s prompts. Remove the new cartridges from their packaging and pull off the protective tape or plastic tab without touching the copper contacts or ink nozzles. Insert each cartridge into the matching color slot and press until it clicks into place. Close the access door.
6
Align cartridges and print a test page
The printer may automatically print an alignment page. If it does not, you can start alignment from the control panel or the HP Smart app after setup. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the alignment page if required.
